The Birth of NZGSCA

The New Zealand Gujarati Sports and Cultural Association (NZGSCA) began in 1990 when a group of passionate Gujarati sports enthusiasts from Young Bloods organized friendly football matches between married and single players.

The first official NZGSCA match took place between Young Bloods and a newly formed team from Nadi, with Young Bloods emerging victorious 3-2 in an exciting contest that marked the beginning of a vibrant sporting tradition.

The inaugural tournament was held at Kelston High School in October 1990, featuring seven teams: Blue Seals, Flying Arrows, Young Bloods, Nadi, Wellington Morchi, Rajput, and Khatri. Blue Seals won this historic tournament by defeating Nadi in the final.

Growth and Expansion

Following our successful launch, NZGSCA quickly expanded its tournament schedule. Easter 1991 saw another tournament at Kelston High School, where Flying Arrows claimed victory.

The 1992 tournament moved to St Heliers, where Rajput secured a narrow 1-0 win against Flying Arrows in the final. Between 1993 and 1996, our tournaments were hosted at MAG schools, broadening our community reach.

Over the years, NZGSCA has evolved from a modest football competition into a comprehensive organization promoting Gujarati sports, cultural heritage, and community service across New Zealand. Today, we organize over 13 different sports tournaments annually.
